Bible Verse Study: Psalm 70:4 – “Let All Those Who Seek You Rejoice”

Verse (NKJV):

“Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
‘Let God be magnified!’”

Key Hebrew Words:

  • בִּקְשֶׁךָ (biqqesh’kha)seek You

    • From בָּקַשׁ (baqash) – to search out, strive for, desire deeply.

    • This is earnest pursuit, not casual interest—it implies intentional longing and dependence.

  • יִשְׂמָחוּ (yismechu)rejoice

    • From שָׂמַח (samach) – to be bright, cheerful, joyful.

    • Rooted in inner delight, often used in the context of worship and celebration.

  • יָגִילוּ (yagilu)be glad

    • From גִּיל (gil) – literally to spin or leap for joy; a word of exuberant, expressive gladness.

  • אֱהָבֵי (’ohavei)those who love

    • Root: אָהַב (’ahav) – deep affection, covenantal love, often used of God's love for His people.

  • תְּשׁוּעָתֶךָ (teshuathekha)Your salvation

    • From יֵשַׁע (yesha‘) – deliverance, rescue, help in distress.

    • This salvation is God’s intervention, His rescue from enemies, sin, and despair.

  • יָגְדַּל (yagdal)be magnified

    • From גָּדַל (gadal) – to grow, become great, be lifted up.

    • Saying “Let God be magnified” is a way of exalting His name, increasing His glory in our sight and speech.

Contextual Insight:

Psalm 70 is a short, urgent plea for help, nearly identical to part of Psalm 40. David is in crisis, surrounded by enemies, and cries out for swift deliverance (v.1). But even in distress, this verse (v.4) provides a pause of worship and declaration, where David turns the focus from his own trouble to the joy of those who love the Lord.

It’s as if David says, “Even now, let those who seek You celebrate You.”

This verse invites a mindset shift: from fear to worship, from self-concern to exalting God together.

Verse Structure Breakdown:

  1. “Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You”

    • Seeking God leads not to despair, but to joyful communion.

    • True seekers find their gladness in God Himself, not just in what He gives.

  2. “And let those who love Your salvation say continually, ‘Let God be magnified!’”

    • Gratitude for salvation should become a lifestyle of praise.

    • “Say continually” implies ongoing worship, not seasonal or circumstantial.

Themes:

  • Joy in Seeking God – The reward for pursuing God isn’t just answers—it’s gladness in His presence.

  • Worship Through Salvation – God’s deliverance should inspire us to lift Him up.

  • Community Praise – This is a corporate call: “let all those…”, not just personal praise.

  • Worship in Hard Times – Even amid enemies and trouble (v.1–3), the heart can still rejoice.

Reflection / Application:

  • Am I seeking God with my whole heart—or casually and inconsistently?

  • Do I experience joy and gladness in His presence—or only when circumstances go well?

  • How can I make “Let God be magnified!” a theme in my daily life, words, and worship?

Journal Prompt:
“Today, what salvation has God given me that I can thank Him for—and how can I magnify Him for it?”
